Thousands of people took part in an Adhishtana Pooja at the Sri Vishnu Kovil in Devinuwara, Matara on Sunday (08), wishing for the United Nations Secretary General Ban ki Moon and the UN to gain intelligence to think rationally. Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma, Economic Development Deputy Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena and Sri Vishnu Kovil Basnayake Nilame Dishan Wickramarathna Gunesekera attended the pooja. �Rohana Maha Adhishtana Pooja to protect the President and motherland�.

 


 

A programme to make the people aware of the Thalassaemia disease was conducted opposite the Fort railway station, Colombo organized by the Thalassaemia Sahana Piyasa of the Colombo North Teaching Hospital at Ragama. Drowning undergrads rescued

Mirissa Coast Conservation Department officials have rescued three Ruhunu University undergraduates while they were drowning in the sea at Polhena, Matara.

The three undergraduates were rescued by Coast Conservation official who have set up a unit to save the lives of those drowning at sea.


Drug dealer detained

The Kandy Magistrate issued a detention order on an alleged drug dealer for seven days on a request made by Kandy Police to detain the suspect for interrogation. The suspect, a resident of Battaramulla was arrested yesterday when he was found in possession of heroin.


Foundation laying

A foundation will be laid for a Dhamma school building at the Mount Lavinia Watarappola Road, Dharmayathanaya on May 17 to coincide with the 2600th Sambuddhathva Jayanthiya.


Fund raising appeal

Blind Citizens Front is making an appeal for funds for 2011 themed "Literacy through Braille".

Cheques and money orders should be drawn in favour of Blind Citizens Front, and sent to Blind Citizens Front, 11, Housing for the Blind, Katubedda, Moratuwa.


Fishermen bring samples of red sea water

Fishermen fishing at Point Pedro Inpurudi area have brought samples of sea water red in colour.

The fishing nets cast six miles from the shore were found to be red in colour.

Their catch in this area had been bountiful earlier but now it has dwindled.

They fear this is an indication of a pending natural disaster.


Radio programmes

Special radio programmes in Sinhala, English, Tamil and Muslim Services will be broadcast over the SLBC on May 12 to commemorate the 94th birth anniversary of late speaker Deshamanya M A Bakeer Markar. Thilak Karunaratne will speak at 6.30pm over the English Service, Gemunu Abesundara at 9am over the Sinhala Service and Dr A M Nahiya at 10pm over the Tamil Service and A M Waais at 8.05pm over the Muslim Service.

The Sahanaya Resource Centre of the National Council for Mental Health, Panadura has organized a Bethi Gee recital at the centre on May 17 at 7 p.m.

The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry in coordination with the Fisheries and Water Resources Department have organized an all night Pirith chanting on May 13 at the Ministry under the patronage of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Rajitha Senaratne.


Blood Donation on May 15

A blood donation organized by the Welfare Society of People�s Leasing Company Limited under the patronage of its CEO and General Manager, D P Kumarage to mark the 2600th Sambuddhathva Jayanthi and the company�s 15th anniversary will be held on May 14 from 10am at the Kelaniya Temple.


Malay symposium

A symposium on Sri Lanka Malay-our mother language organized by Konfrensi Melayu Sri Lanka (COSLAM) and Persatudn Wanita Melaya Sri Lanka (WASLAM) will be held on May 22 from 9 am to 1pm at the Padang Complex, Jaalan padang Kew Road, Colombo 2.

Among those who will address the symposium are Honeida Packeer, T K Azoor, B D K Saldin, Muhaj Hamin, Peter Slomdnsun, Sebastian Nordhoff and Romola Rassool.
