Suspects arrested in Kandy Central Market robbery

Two suspects who had broken into 10 trade stalls in the Kandy Central Market and robbed mobile phones and other items and cash amounting to several lakhs of rupees were arrested by the Central Province Police Intelligence and Information Unit along with 20 mobile phones in their possession yesterday. The suspects are residents of Bogambara, Kandy. Police investigations are continuing.


Porn dealers arrested

Owners of two video parlours who had DVDs and CDs containing pornographic material were arrested by Anuradhapura police during a raid conducted in Pubudupura and Vijayapura on Wednesday afternoon.

The raid was conducted by a team led by Chief Inspector Prabath Gallage under the direction of ASP Raja Wickramanayake and OIC Gamini Jayasena. Investigations are continuing.


 

Amadahara from May 17 to 19

The Amadahara Sadaham Vesak event organized annually by Lake House in view of the 2600th Sri Sambuddhathava Jayanthi will be held from May 17 to 19 opposite Lake House.


Dharmasala, Dhamma school in Panadura

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa will lay the foundation stone for the proposed new Dharmasala and Dhamma School building for Sri Punyodayarama Viharaya at Wanduramulle, Panadura on May 6 at 10.02 am.

Sri Lanka Ramanna Nikaya Anunayaka and Panadura Gorakapola Vidyaraja Pirivena Chief Incumbent Ven Doranegoda Indrasena Nayake Thera will chair the ceremony. Buddhist and Religious Affairs Deputy Minister M K D S Gunawardena will also participate.


Pinkama for Sambuddhatva Jayanthi

A special pinkama to mark the 2600th Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi will be held at the Nawinna Raja Maha Viharaya on May 7.

The programme will include meditation, Dhammadesana and Buddhist discussions and will be held under the patronage of Viharadhipathi Ven Paradande Indaratana, Chief Sanghanayake Thera of Moneragala district.

The dhammadesana scheduled at 8.30 am, 1 pm and 3.30 pm will be delivered by Ven Pathegama Sumanaratana Thera and Ven Wathurugama Nandasiri Thera.

Asoke Mendis will conduct the Buddhist talk and discussion at 10.30 am.


Buddha Mandira opening

The new Buddha Mandira built at the premises Kesbewa Provincial Secretarial Office premises will be opened under the patronage of Labour Minister Gamini Lokuge on May 6 at 9.56 am.

This event will be held along with the 2600th Sambuddhathva Jayanthi. Colombo District Secretary S Hapuarachci and Kesbewa Provincial Secretary A L Kaluarachchi will participate.


Ketchimala feast an Saturday

Bukhary Muslim Grand Feast - 2011 Ketchimala Dharga Shareef - Beruwela will be held on May 7 after Isha prayers.

The grand feast will be held on May 8 at 9.30 am. The Thamam programme from 9.30 am to 10.30 am will be broadcast live on the SLBC - Muslim Service.


Holy Cross College OBU AGM

The annual general meeting of Holy Cross College, Kalutara Old Boys Union Colombo Branch will be held on May 7 at 6.30 pm at Sapphire Hotel, Wellawatte.


Bar Assn meeting

The House at the meeting of the Bar Council on April 30 unanimously resolved that the meeting be adjourned for May 7 to discuss further the Controversial Darusman Report.

The adjourned meeting will be held on May 7 at 10.30 am at the Bar Association Auditorium of Sri Lanka, 153, Mihindu Mawatha, Colombo 12.


Passing out parade

The passing out parade of a batch of youth who had successfully completed a leadership and personality development course conducted by the National Youth Brigade will be held at the Getambe Playground, Kandy today at 8 am.


 

Awareness on drug addiction

A series of programmes have been planned to promote the health conditions in the North Central Province and to rehabilitate drug addicts.

All Advanced Level schoolchildren will be provided awareness of the consequences of drug addiction, in addition to conducting residential workshops to drug addicts by health committees throughout the province.

These details were disclosed at a discussion held on May 03 between North Central Province Health and Social Services Minister Peshala Jayaratne and state officials in the province. Thirty more seminars will be held in the future.


Woman dies of stab injuries

A woman from Pahalawatta road, Galnewa who received stab injuries during a family dispute at Galnewa, succumbed to her injuries after being transferred to the Anuradhapura teaching hospital from Galnewa hospital on Sunday. Her husband who also received stab injuries during a scuffle with a brother-in-law is receiving treatment at the hospital.


Post-offices lacking services

Residents at Makola, Kiribathgoda, Kelaniya and Kadawata face difficulties due to the non-availability of e-mail and photocopy services in the respective post offices. Though the responsible authorities have long been informed no action has been taken so far.

Journalists and government servants are the most inconvenienced.


Bio-gas production

A bio-gas production unit will be set up at Kelaniya PS area to recycle bio-degradable refuse collected from the area daily.

This is proposed by the office of the Gampaha District Secretariat Director of Planning with the co-ordination of the Kelaniya Divisional Secretariat and Pradeshiya Sabha.


Mosquito war in Sainthamaruthu

The Sainthamaruthu Divisional Secretariat in the Ampara district has requested household and hotel owners to eliminate mosquito breeding places in their areas.

D S Sainthamaruthu A L M Saleem and health officers found mosquito breeding grounds during inspections.

Saleem said legal action will be taken against hotel and household owners who do not destroy mosquito breeding sites.


Oral Health Bureau to be opened

The Oral Health Bureau Sri Lanka (OHBSL) in Maharagama will be commissioned by Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena on May 10 at 10 a.m. Awards and certificate presentation for 67 dental therapists will also take place.


Sacred relics exhibition

The Hunumulla, Sapugahathammita Sri Bodhiyanganarama Temple has organized a Sacred Relics exhibition and several other religious programes to commemorate the 2600th Sambuddhathva Jayanthi.

The exhibition will be held at the temple on May 14, 15 and 16 from 4.00pm to 10.00pm.

Dhamma desana, bodhi pooja and 73 gnana dhassana pooja are also organized during these three days from 4.00pm.



Japan�s Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Vice Minister Makiko Kikuta called on External Affairs Minister Professor G.L. Peiris on Thursday. Japan�s Ambassador to Sri Lanka Kunio Takahashi also participated.
