Inter-University Enterprise Mobility Software
Development Competition 2011:
Undergrads to interact at industry level
Motorola and SLASSCOM sponsored Inter-University Enterprise Mobility
Software Development Competition 2011 was launched recently at Prof V K
Samaranayake Auditorium in Colombo University amidst a full house
participation from many state and private sector universities.
While welcoming academic staff and undergraduates from all
universities, Motorola’s R&D Centre Director and Country Manager
Anuradha Tennakoon said, “The first completion in 2010 was a great
success. We want to make this year’s competition even better.” He went
on to explain why Enterprise Mobility is important in today’s business
world and the competition is purely a CSR initiative from Motorola and
SLASSCOM to move Sri Lanka to the forefront of this most dynamic
technology today.
“Motorola being the world leader in Enterprise Mobility and having a
wealth of skills and experience at Sri Lanka R&D centre, we think it is
their duty to impart the knowledge to future generation of IT
professionals in Sri Lanka,” said Tennakoon.
Head SLASSCOM CoE for Mobile and Telecom and DnotaIT CEO Nayana
Serasinghe, said that by making this an annual event SLASSCOM wishes to
expand Sri Lanka’s capacity in this technology so that it too will help
SLASSCOM reaching its export revenue target of US $ 1b by year 2015.
Addressing the gathering Director, University of Colombo School of
Computing Prof Gihan Wickramanayake said that he is pleased to see
Motorola and SLASSCOM continuing this competition and selecting
University of Colombo to launch this year’s event too.
Remembering the vision of late Prof V K Samaranayake who is
considered as the father of Sri Lankan IT, Prof Wickramanayake said that
this is an excellent opportunity for the undergraduates to show their
innovative and creative talent.
The participants were from all state and private sector Universities
who offered a Bachelors Degree in IT or Degrees with substantial IT
modules including Universities of Colombo, Moratuwa, Kelaniya,
Peradeniya, Ruhuna, Uva-Wellassa, Rajarata, Jaffna, Open University Sri
Lanka, APIIT, IIT, SLIIT and NIBM.
“This event would be a great opportunity for us to understand the
subject at industry level.
Therefore, we are expecting to get the maximum use out of this and we
will be submitting our abstract with an innovative idea since we are
working on our final year project report on mobile applications. But
there may be insufficient resources for us to come up with a successful,
complete application.
However, we would like to thank Motorola, SLASSCOM as well as to our
IT division for delivering us this valuable knowledge,” said
undergraduates S Ranjith and K Nitharasan from University of Jaffna.
“This competition will help students to come up with innovative out
of the box ideas using up to date technologies. Also it will help
students to interact with leading industries outside their usual
academic environment.
We are certain that this competition will help students to improve
their technical, presentation and entrepreneurial skills,” said the
academic staff from University of Uva-Wellassa who travelled all the way
from Badulla to attend the launch.
Motorola and SLASSCOM expect to hold the final competition during
latter part of September this year.
Greenwich implements Dell Equallogic
Identifying the undisputable business and technological benefits of
unified storage, Greenwich Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. implements the Dell
Equallogic storage platform, the world leader of Storage Area Networking
(SAN) at Industrial Clothing Limited and its affiliated companies, a
leading manufacturer of Safety Gloves and Shoes in Sri Lanka. Dell
Equallogic is a revolutionary SAN architecture which formulates the
centralized data storage of virtualized datacenters and delivers
advanced storage functionality with a highly scalable and remarkably
economical storage appliance portfolio that offers “real” investment
protection for organizations that plan data storage acquisitions.

Industrial Clothing Limited Sri Lanka ICT Head Sumeda Gunarathna,
highlighted, “Our decision to go with Dell Equallogic is based on a
number of variables. Dell Equallogic’s simplicity and open ecosystem
approach to storage management will allow us to enhance our
functionality across our environments through interoperability,
scalability, expandability and the support of cross platform
environments.”
Greenwich CEO Suran Fonseka, elaborated, “Green IT, energy efficiency
and flexibility are important goals for IT organizations today. It is
our objective to help our clients meet these goals by simplifying
datacenter operations.
We believe the solution provided to Industrial Clothing Ltd. will
help them extract maximum business value through this resilient and
flexible datacenter while providing the capability to connect across
platforms.”
Generally, data is often duplicated and ill handled while
provisioning multiple storage capacities distributed across the
datacenters will total up to alarming amounts of storage volumes wasted
and paid for.
Now with Dell EqualLogic Storage Area Networking, enterprise
organizations can leverage upon it and extend a unified storage platform
to provision dynamic and demanding storage requirements of ever growing
server hosts and end users.
The Dell EqualLogic storage management has provision capacities to
connect all existing servers in the datacenter to one appliance.
From an investment’s perspective the idea is to reduce TCO and
increase ROI of any business that’s suffering from non consolidated and
expensive storage management. The datacenter offers 99.999 percent
protection which is tested and proven across continents.
The provisioning of storage is done seamlessly on workloads
originating from different servers and applications while the storage
processes are dynamically distributed between storage volumes without IT
administrator intervention.
Greenwich is a fully owned subsidiary of PCH, and is one of the
leading ICT solutions providers in the country.
Having started off with unmatched expertise in areas such as HRM and
payroll solutions, point of sales solutions and time and attendance
management solutions, Greenwich has now grown to become a leader in
providing advanced systems integration, server and storage
virtualization solutions and business applications. Greenwich will
continuously invest in its virtualization and unified communication
practices, two of the most popular areas in ICT requirements for
corporates at present.
