Positioning country as training hub:

Sri Lanka is keen to be a training hub for global trade and policies
in the region and has taken steps to give exposure to mid career level
staff of the Treasury and other related organizations involved in global
trade.
Speaking to media on Sri Lanka’s contribution to the international
Trade and the role of the World Trade Organization in Colombo on Friday
Temasek Foundation Centre for Trade and Negotiation (TFCTN) Head Dr
Deborah Elms said, that Sri Lanka should develop infrastructure and
skills required to position the country as a training hub.
She said that there is a mismatch of skills available and skills
required in the country and the government should continue this training
to bridge this gap. The country is moving in the right direction and it
could be a good export market for agricultural products and eco tourism.
Dr Elms said the trade environment in India, Sri Lanka and China is
very important to Sri Lanka and the country should be open to the
domestic market. She said that the Sri Lanka Government buys a lot of
services and the staff involved in this should have better knowledge to
identify future challenges. The global economy has changed a lot during
the last two years and Sri Lanka being a member of World Trade
Organization the staff should be aware of all these trade related issues
for the benefit of the country.
The TFCTN conducted two day residential training program for 40
participants nominated by each organization at Negombo Jet Wing Hotel.
