The State Engineering Corporation (SEC) has given priority to local
manufacturers and contractors when doing purchases for engineering
projects following the recently granted Cabinet approval.
SEC Chairman Professor Ashu Marasinghe told Daily News Business that
tenders have been called within a short period of time and seven
applications are under evaluation at present. Two local companies has
been offered contracts so far. Awareness among local companies have been
created about this process to receive more applications.
Professor Marasinghe at a media briefing last month said that from
this year 7.5 percent priority will be given to local job contractors in
projects funded by the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank and 10
percent priority to local job contractors in the projects funded by the
Sri Lankan Government.
He assured fifteen percent priority for purchases in projects funded
by the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank to locally manufactured
goods and 20 percent priority to locally made goods for the purchases in
the locally funded projects.
It was expected that utilizing local products for the development
process in the country would satisfy many aspects in the development
field and will lead to enhance the local raw material market generating
job opportunities. The Chairman said that this is a very difficult task
but the SEC has now given a start to do it despite many challenges.
The SEC has identified suitable parameters to offer these tenders
through Mawbima Lanka Foundation under “Ganna Ape De”.
