Free entrance to zoo for two days

Elephant dance is one of the attractions at the zoo

Entrance to the Dehiwala National Zoological gardens will be totally free of charge for two days starting from today to children below 12 years, said its Director General Bhashwara Senanka Gunaratne.

This decision had been made on the advice of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

This decision was taken to give children an opportunity to gain knowledge about animals and make the future generation love and care animals.

"Since it is school holidays it is expected that parents will make best use of this opportunity," the Director General said.

He said modernization programs are being conducted at a cost of Rs 1,200 million. These programs aim to develop the zoo in to an animal friendly environment. Arrangements are also underway to open two new zoos in Hambantota and Wagalla in Pinnawela in the near future.
