President strengthened UPFA - Minister

The strengthening of the UPFA under the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa is a politically significant feature, states Petroleum Industries Minister and UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha in a congratulatory message issued on behalf of the UPFA to the President to mark his birthday and inauguration to the second term of office.

The message said as Prime Minister of the 2004 UPFA Government President Rajapaksa rendered a colossal service to the people during the tsunami.

He used everything within his means to safeguard the UPFA Government when the JVP group left it in an effort to destabilise it.

When he contested the 2005 Presidential election as the Presidential candidate he was able to bring many other small parties together under the UPFA umbrella.

After assuming the Presidential election he was appointed President of the UPFA as well.

It was his leadership and human qualities which enabled him to bring together many other small parties to the UPFA at subsequent Provincial and Local Government elections as well. The UPFA won a convincing victory at the 2010 General Election due to the confidence placed in him by the people.

It was under his leadership that a single party could obtain a two third majority in Parliament after the introduction of the Executive Presidential system.

Today nearly 30 political parties are supporting the UPFA and many others have agreed to form it in future to support the accelerated national development effort.

Various political forces and political parties representing all communities too have flocked round the UPFA due to his astute and patriotic leadership.
