Sajith should be made UNP leader - UNP MPs

UNP MPs Earl Gunasekera and Lakshman Seneviratne yesterday said that Hambantota district UNP MP Sajith Premadasa should replace the incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe as the party’s leader.

Launching a scathing attack on the leadership, Lakshman Seneviratne MP said that Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was trying to be a life time leader of the party.

He said that the incumbent leader was afflicted with the mental disorder – Asperger syndrome (is an autism spectrum disorder that is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests.

It differs from other autism spectrum disorders by its relative preservation of linguistic and cognitive development. Although not required for diagnosis, physical clumsiness and a typical use of language are frequently reported). The MP noted that the UNP leader had a habit of forgetting or postponing important matters (referring to the above).

At a press briefing where both Seneviratne and Gunasekera voiced support for the proposed Constitutional Amendments said the UNP leader should ensure internal democracy within the party before talking about ensuring democracy in the country.

Commenting on the much talked about UNP reforms Seneviratne MP stated that the UNP leader in self interest had relegated the draft to the back burner.

He noted that powers in making a decisions regarding the leadership should be vested with the party administrative members from the top to the grass roots level.

He also alleged that the UNP leadership was preventing the emergence of a second rung in the UNP hierarchy.

”In addition, the leadership is deliberately postponing the holding of a national convention to escape the wrath of the membership,” he added.

Harking back to a recent working committee meeting the MP said that he had raised the question whether UNP could win an election with the present leadership but none had risen in the defence of the leader, he added.

Gunasekera and Seneviratne said that it was time for other UNP MPs to put the country before the party and added that there were many like minded members in the UNP fold at present. RS
