HD for a finer vision

One machine can do the work of 50 ordinary men but no machine can do the work of one extraordinary man. So says Elbert Hubbard in The Roycroft Dictionary and Book of Epigrams. A new set of technological equipments related to cinema and television were unveiled in Sri Lanka for the first time recently.

Imported to the island by Rohan Welivita of Fine Vision, the camera systems, colour correctors and satellite uplink units are the kind that were used while making Oscar winning movies as well as the popular series Night Rider.

“I have been abroad on several occasion to do research and study on the latest technical equipment that will enter the market. We have brought the equipment to make hassle-free quality productions for Sri Lankan moviegoers,” Welivita opined at the launch which took place at Rajagiriya.

He also added that he had made maximum use out of the Governments’ tax concessions as he believes in a profit making cinema culture. NFC Chairman Kumar Abeysinghe, Media Ministry Secretary W B Ganegala, Rupavahini Chairman Sarath Kongahage, OnAir World Pvt Ltd Chairman Nimal Lakshapathiarachchi, directors Amaranth Jayatileke, Bennett Ratnayake, Udayakantha Warnasuriya and many others were present at the event.

One of the significant 21st century High Definition (HD) technology equipment which caught the eye was the De Vinci Colour Correction system. It is one of the main manufacturers of high-end post-production color grading and film restoration systems for motion picture film, video and broadcast post-production facilities.

New technology spells quality

The Da Vinci Systems equipment was initially developed by VTA in 1982 for use by a Hollywood, FL, based production/post-production facility to alter and enhance colors from scanned film and video tape. The Wiz system was marketed to other post-production facilities, laying the foundation for the creation of the colorist and the post-production color suite.

The control panel is based on track balls and other discrete controls that enable colorists to control the software that manipulates motion picture images.

A 16 input HD/SD multi camera system, Panasonic HPX – 302 AVC Intra 4:2:2 – 10 bit, Panasonic HMC – 151, AVC – HD, 4:2:2 – 8 bit and Panasonic HPX – 172, DVC – Pro HD, 4:2:2: - 10 bit were on display. All these and more units such as the video capturing system, audio capture system, audio – video measuring system and big screen HD and 5” LCD preview facility make up the newest full HD editing suite that has been commissioned and made operation by Fine Vision.

These state-of-the-art facilities related products and features are capable of even working on full high definition – 16:9 and 1920 x 1080 for TV and cinema.

“Soon we will be moving onto HD mini theatres in the future. Meanwhile directors can make maximum use of the equipment to get ready for this future task,” Welivita reflected his hopes for a better future for cinema.
