Lanka to hold World Buddhist Conference

The Government and the World Buddhist Congress Headquarters will hold
the 60th anniversary conference of the World Buddhist Congress in Sri
Lanka from November 13 to 17, 2010. The All Ceylon Buddhist Congress
will coordinate the conference an All Ceylon Buddhist Congress spokesman
told the Daily News. This will be a great opportunity for Sri Lanka to
host the World Buddhist Conference meeting, he said.
The decision had been taken to hold this international Buddhist
Conference in Sri Lanka after the discussion with Prime Minister D M
Jayaratna and the Government officials.
Prime Minister�s Media Secretary Sisira Wijesinghe told the Daily
News that a delegation of 700 persons will participate in this
Conference. The World Buddhist Congress will also be held along with the
Sri Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi in 2011. The main purpose of the organizers
is to spread Theravada Buddhism throughout the world.
To map out the basic steps, the World Buddhist Conference, Director
General Palop Thiyari arrived in Sri Lanka and held several rounds of
discussions with the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress Chairman Jagath
Sumathipala, the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress spokesman added.
The first conference of the World Buddhist Congress was held in Sri
Lanka in 1950 and later in 1972 and 1984. |
