Buddha Pradeepa 2010 out Monday
Daily News Vesak annual Buddha Pradeepa 2010 will be launched on May
24.This year�s edition is a collection of articles containing
illuminative insights into the teachings of the Buddha written by
scholar monks and laity. The 74 page issue printed on 70 GSM will

Inland Revenue Department back at headquarters
Activities of the Inland Revenue Department, other than taxes
retained on interest, Paye tax and official duties of Section 3
conducted at Ascot, Access Towers, Hydepark Corner, Colombo 2 and
Readyware Building, Park Street have been shifted to the Inland revenue
Department Head Quarters Chittampalam A Gardiner Road Colombo 02. Bank
of Ceylon and People�s Bank maintain their branches at Inland Revenue
Headquarters for the convenience of tax payers, the Inland Revenue
Department said in a press release.
Consumers to benefit from fish market
The Central Fish Market at Peliyagoda being constructed on a proposal
of President Mahinda Rajapaksa would provide more facilities to
consumers and fish traders, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Dr.
Rajitha Senaratne said.
The Minister said consumers will be able to buy hygienic, fresh fish
at remarkable rates from this market which is envisaged to handle 30
percent of the total fish product of the country. The new market complex
would ease the congestion prevailing at St. Jone�s Market, Colombo, he
said.
The total cost of the complex is Rs. 1,700 million, funded by the
Government and the Asian Development Bank. The building complex spreads
3.17 hectares in extent. The project will be implemented under the
Aquatic Resources Development and quality development project of the
Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ministry, the Minister said.
Public help needed to make Colombo flood free - CMC

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has taken every possible step to
reduce floods in the Colombo city and its suburbs in the future. It also
requested public to co-operate with the CMC and not to throw their
garbage to drainages and canals.
CMC Chief Administrator Omar Kamil said drainage systems in the city
including opposite the Public Administration Ministry are blocked
following floods. Measures have been taken clean to block drainages in
the city, he said.
�CMC cleaners with the assistance of vehicles fitted with high
pressure jets are cleaning drainages,� he added.
Kamil said the CMC has launched a new project to identify six areas
to clean gullies in Colombo city everyday. CMC employees are engaged in
cleaning the gullies in Princess of Wales Mawatha, York Street,
Reclamation Road, Reid Avenue, Galle Road from Bambalapitiya to
Wellawatte and Horton Place.
Meanwhile, the CMC is desilting the drain in the vicinity of
Sugathadasa Stadium.
Fishing boat capsizes

A fishing boat called �Lurdumatha� capsized at the sea off Wadduwa
due to heavy tides Wednesday. One fisherman was drowned and two others
escaped. The body of the drowned fisherman was recovered and rushed to
the Panadura Base Hospital.
Wadduwa Police are investigating.
Coop City Manager remanded

Panadura Magistrate Ranga Dissanayaka remanded the acting manager of
the Alubomulla Coop City outlet of the Bandaragama MPCS on June 3 in
connection with committing a fraud of Rs. 869,698.81 valued essential
food items from time to time.
The Panadura Police Special Crime and Fraud Bureau arrested the
suspect and produced her before Court.
Vesak pandal
A Vesak Pandal depicting Vidura Jathakaya erected by Eksath Welanda
Sangamaya Kottawa will be displayed from May 27 to 31 at the Kottawa Bus
Stand.
Vesak Bethigee
A Vesak Bethigee organised by the youth club of Kottawa under the
supervision of the chief incumbent of Kottawa Punnyawardhanaramaya Ven.
Weraduwe Sirijothy Thera will be held on May 27 to May 31 at Kottawa
Bodhiya.
Sadaham Charika today
The special Vesak Sadaham Charika, a Buddhist tour organised by the
International Buddhist Centre Viharaya, Wellawatte, Colombo, taking
gifts to underprivileged children will be held today from 9.00 a m.
The Sadaham Charika organized by Ven Maharagama Mahinda Thera will
carry with it educational material, food and drinking water to children
living in shanties.The Charika will tour Wellawatte, Bambalapitiya,
Dehiwala and Kirulapone where the monks will also preach the Dhamma to
children and their parents, International Buddhist Centre said in a
press release.
Vesak celebrations
The Colombo South International College will observe Vesak on May 25
and 26.
Primary students under the guidance of Co-ordinators Rukmani
Karunaratne and Pumika Wijeratne will visit the Bellanwila Raja Maha
Viharaya on May 25. After religious observances, Ven. Boralesgamuwe
Pemarathana Thera will deliver a discourse on the Dhamma. This will be
followed by a meditation course.
Ven. Olande Ananda Thera of the Meditation Centre, Pagoda Road,
Nugegoda will deliver a talk on Buddhist doctrine to senior students on
May 26. Students will later visit Sunandaramaya, Kalubowila.
The College has also organized a Vesak lantern contest. The best
decorated lanterns will receive prizes.
The program is organized by Vice Principal Nalini Jayasekera and
Ranmali Wettasinghe.
Vesak program
A two-day religious program to mark Vesak festival will be held on
May 27 and 28 at the Colombo National Hospital Cardiology Unit.
It is organized by the doctors and the hospital staff.
A Dhamma sermon will be delivered by Ven. Polpithimukalane Pannasiri
Thera on May 27 at 9.30 a.m. while a Buddha pooja followed by a Dhamma
sermon by Ven. Galpothukande Vajira Thera will be held on May 28 at
10.00 a.m.
Four stamps for Vesak
The Posts Department will issue four stamps to the denominations of
Rs 4, Rs 5, Rs 10 and Rs 30 together with the first day cover, a
commemorative card and a Vesak card to mark Vesak on May 24.
A function in connection with the cancellation of the first day cover
will be held on May 24 at 3.00 p.m. at Mahiyangana Rajamaha Viharaya
under the patronage of Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Posts and
Telecommunication Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga and Deputy Minister
Duminda Dissanayake.
New Iraq envoy to Lanka
The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Colombo informed that Kahtan
Taha Khalaf has been appointed as the new Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Iraq to Sri Lanka on May 18.
Lectures postponed
Due to the unfavourable weather, lectures of Bachelor of Labour
Education (BLE) program of Colombo University have been postponed.
A university release said all the lectures will be carried out as
usual from May 24.
Bahai Holy Day
Bahais around the world including in Sri Lanka will celebrate the
anniversary of the birth of the Bahai Faith tomorrow.

mentioned that a communication tower in Galle was damaged by lightning
and some people were hospitalized.
However Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka Deputy
Director (Networks) informed us that there had not been such an incident
