Jaya Pirith chanting ceremony

A mass Jaya Pirith chanting ceremony will be held with 3,000 members
of the Maha Sangha taking part at the BMICH on May 22, in memory of the
valiant members of the armed forces who had sacrificed their lives
battling terrorists.
Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who called on Malwatte Maha
Nayake the Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera and the
Asgiriya Maha Nayake Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkhita Thera to head
the pirith chanting ceremony. The religious event is organized by the
Defence Ministry.
The Jaya Piritha was chanted by a large number of the Maha Sangha in
2008 to invoke blessings on President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the three armed
forces commanders and troops and it is believed that the Jaya Piritha
boosted the morale of the troops and helped in the success of the
humanitarian operations in the North that ended in the defeat of the
terrorists.
It was held in 2009 as well and the public will be allowed to
participate at this religious event for the first time.
Religious ceremony at Somawathie Chetiya

Following a pledge made by Ven Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thera in 2008,
to see an end to terrorism in the country, an all night religious
ceremony will be held on May 8 beginning 7.00 p.m at the Somawathie
Chethiya presided over by the Chief Incumbent of Somawathi Chetiya Ven
Pahamune Sri Sumangala Thera.
A nine foot Buddhist statue will be installed near the Somawathi
Chetiya on the same day.
It is believed that the right Tooth Relic of The Buddha is enshrined
within the Somawathi Chetiya.
In 2008 Ven Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thera, chanting the Damsak
Pevathum Sutta, at Somawathi Chetiya, offered Adistanapooja to protect
the whole country from terrorist activities. To mark the above
Adishtanapuja the religious activities have been organized by the
Polgahawela Mahamevna Monastery, Ven Meerigama Indrawansa Thera said.
Mahaweli reservoirs to attract tourists

The Mahaweli Authority will take steps to develop Mahaweli reservoirs
as tourist destinations, said a Mahaweli Authority Official. As the
first step a boat service will be started at Randenigala reservoir to
attract tourists.
He also said that the Authority will start a training program for
Mahaweli security officers to face disaster situations.
Mahaweli systems always face danger of floods and disasters like
embankment breaking.
It is necessary to train security officers at Mahaweli reservoirs
when the area is promoted as tourist destinations. They will be trained
in swimming and diving, he said.
Applications called for drama festival

The National Youth Services Council (NYSC) invites applications and
Drama Scripts from youth below 29 years for the National Youth Drama
Festival 2010.
The competitions will be held in District and National levels.
The National level National Youth Drama Festival will be held in
Colombo.
The duration of a short play should be 15 to 30 minutes and the
duration of a lengthy drama should not exceed two hours.
Competitors should send their drama scripts on or before May 15 in
three copies.
The drama copies could be sent or handover to the district offices of
the NYSC or to the Assistant Director (Cultural), the National Youth
Services Council, 65, High Level Road, Maharagama.
Greener pastures land 110 in hot water

A group of 110 suspects produced before the Matara Chief Magistrate
Udesh Ranatunga for trying to emigrate to Australia illegally were
sentenced to three months' rigorous imprisonment suspended for seven
years and fined Rs. 20,000 each.
On default of the fine, they were sentenced to a further three
months' RI. They were among 145 suspects apprehended near the Matara and
Devinuwara coast while trying to emigrate to Australia in multi-day
boats.
The case against the balance 35 suspects was postponed for June 2
since their finger prints had not been submitted to courts.
Dhamma sermons, meditation
Ven. Galigamuwe Gananadeepa Thera will conduct Dhamma sermons and a
meditation program on May 9 from 8 a.m. till 4.00 p.m. At the All Ceylon
Buddhist Congress Hall, Bauddhaloka Mawatha.
Bishop Cyril Abeynaike Memorial Lecture
The Bishop Cyril Abeynaike Memorial Lecture will be delivered by
Moratuwa University civil engineering senior professor Priyan Dias, on
May 7 on 'Is Science very different from Religion' at the Cathedral of
Christ the Living Saviour, 368, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7.
Needs help
C Vinushan, 14, of 655/11D 57, Samagi Watta, Narahenpita has been
diagnosed with cancer and is taking treatment at the Oasis Hospital,
Narahenpita. He is a student of Hindu College, Colombo.
Dr R.S. Jayatilleke who treats him says the cost of the maintenance
treatment required for two years will be approximately Rs 500,000. As
his parents are unable to foot this bill, they request kind donors to
