The Government will import 13 new power sets from China for short and
long distance services.
Sri Lanka Railways General Manager P.P. Wijesekera told the Daily
News these power sets will be deployed to the up country line, coastal
line and Kelani Valley line mainly to ease the rush hour congestion.
He said the 13 new power sets will arrive in the country in the first
quarter of next year. "Earlier power sets were used for short distance
regional services. We tested power sets for long distance services from
Matara and Colombo and it was successful.
We plan to deploy especially designed power sets for long distance
trains including upcountry service.
They have been especially designed for long distance journeys with
all facilities," Wijesekera said.
He said a team of engineers of China Southern Railway (CSR) which
provide power sets to Sri Lanka have arrived in the country to discuss
future arrangements and the feasibility plan including technical and
environmental backgrounds of new power sets.
