Nepal to control illicit drug trade

NEPAL: Nepal aims to develop a "drug free" healthy society, said Shankar Koirala, Joint Secretary for Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday unveiling the annual report of International Narcotics Control Board -2009 (INCB) as a part of global launching of the report.

Unveiling the report amid a press conference organized jointly by United Nations Information Center and UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) here in Kathmandu Valley, Koirala spotlighted Government's initiatives in dealing with narcotic drugs.

Hinting on Nepal being used as a transit point of illicit drug, Koirala said, "Nepali Government is targeting on three main points to control illicit drug. We are working on how to control drug supply, demand reduction and harm reduction."

Citing drug abuse not only a national problem but also regional as well as international problem, he said Nepali government is willing to work with stake holders, non-government organizations and concerned parties.

Meanwhile, in its annual report, the Vienna-based INCB has warned that the use of so called "date rape drugs" is on the rise. "INCB is also raising the alarm about new psychoactive substances which are easier to obtain. KATHMANDU, Friday, Xinhua
