Minister Jhonston Fernando yesterday said UNP led by Ranil
Wickremesinghe selected Sarath Fonseka as the Presidential candidate to
tarnish the country’s image among the international community by making
him say negative statements about the country.
Addressing a press conference at the Government Information
Department, Fernando said Wickremesinghe was in a foul mood as he could
not stop the operation against the LTTE although he tried to do so in
line with international conspiracies and he tried to manipulate Sarath
Fonseka to defame the country in the international arena.
Referring to the results of the Presidential Election, the Minister
said there were two victors at the election - President Mahinda
Rajapaksa the first and the second Ranil Wickremesinghe as he could
secure his positions as the Opposition Leader and the UNP leader as
Fonseka obtained a lesser number of votes than Wickremesinghe in the
previous election.
Fernando said the UNPers were in a pathetic plight since 1994 and UNP
leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, its Chairman, General Secretary and few
friends of Ranil Wickremesinghe were responsible for it.
“The UNP will lose badly at the next General Election,” he said.
The Minister said Wickremesinghe had destroyed eight years of the
political future of the UNP and invited all UNPers who love their
village, district and the country and all the other political parties
allied with the UNP to form an alliance to join with the Government led
by President Rajapaksa to develop the nation.
Fernando warned UNPers that the JVP had joined hands with the UNP to
secure 25 to 30 seats in Parliament again at this General Election as it
is unable to obtain such a number of seats all alone. He said JVP
leaders always showed grassroots level members a mirage and betrayed
them later.
