New squash court for Nalanda

President Mahinda Rajapaksa unveiling the plaque to open the new squash court of Nalanda College watched by Deputy President of the OBA Kassapa Mahendra de Silva.

A new page in the annals of Nalanda College, Colombo was turned on October 26 when the newly constructed squash court was opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Squash has become a popular sport in Sri Lanka in recent years. The idea of constructing a court at the college premises, in keeping with the trend prevailing in the field of sports at present, was mooted by the past President of the Junior Old Boys' Association of Nalanda College, Athula Jayasekera.

The idea was well received by the Old Nalandians and Prasanna Amarabandu, another old boy of Nalanda, undertook to design the court.

The present Deputy President of the OBA, Kassapa Mahendra De Silva, took upon himself the burden of financing the entire cost of the project, amounting to over seven million rupees, with his personal funds. Construction was under the able supervision of Premasiri Nanayakkara yet another old boy of Nalanda College. The culminating event of the official opening of the court and handing it over to the college was organized by the executive committee of the OBA ably assisted by Sugath Nagahawatte of the Junior OBA.
