Mowbray Athletes steal the limelight

Athletes from the little known Mowbray Girls College, Kandy, clinched three titles at the Kandy District Junior Athletic Championship and Senior Relay Carnival organised by the Kandy District Athletics Association and worked off for two days at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy and concluded on Wednesday.

Over three thousand athletes were on show at this Junior Athletic championship which was for schools in the Kandy District with all the leading schools participating.

Mowbray Girls College is a small school atop the mountain which skirts the Kandy Lake and has a student population of around 500 mostly boarders. But they do not have a playground of their own to practise and they use the road early in the mornings or any other ground which is available says their devoted coach Dhammika Lokuhettige who himself travels all the way from Gampola to train the girls.

The achievement of Mowbray Girls College is creditable as they beat all the leading schools in Knady and considering the fact the resources and amenities at their disposal.

Mowbray Girls College first won the under 18 girls championship with 34 points pushing Mahamaya Girls College who got 20 points into second place. Next they clinched the Girls under 20 championship comfortably with 85 points. They dominated this age to such an extent that the second placed St. anthony's Girls College had only 15 points. They completed their dominance when they won Girls Senior Relay championship having 129 points and the runner up Mahamaya Girls College could collect only 57 points. Here again a very comfortable lead of 72 points.

Mowbray Girls College achieved all this against most schools having better amenities and with student population exceeding 3000. Therefore this school need to be encouraged. Another secret is that these school children do not have much exposure as they are from the plantations and they are athletes with natural talent which only needed sharpening.

Also excelling among the girls schools was Mahamaya Girls College which won the girls under 16 championship with 37 points with Sri Rahula College as runner up with 16 points. Mahamaya also won the Junior girls championship with ease getting 282 points and the runner up St. Anthony's Girls College could gather 96 points.

Trinity College won the boys Junior championship with 214 points and their rivals St. Anthony's College finished runner up with 165 points. Dharmaraja College won the overall boys championship and also the under 18 championship.

Acting Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa and Basnayake Nilame of the Pattini Devale Rohan Paranagama was the Chief Guest and he distributed the awards along with Chandana Ekanayake (Hony. Treasurer Sri Lanka Athletic Association), Col. Sugath Madugalle (Vice President SLAA) G. Kulathunga (Superintendent of Prisons, Kandy) and V.G. Tennakoon (President - Kandy District AA).
