Shaiza Khan leads Pakistan women's team

A strong and well balanced Pakistan team led by Shaiza Khan will arrive next month to play Sri Lanka in a Test and three ODIs.

The Pakistanis are brimming with confidence with newcomers making a mark.

Some World Cup 2000 players are dropped and young blood brought in ahead of the World Cup 2005 in South Africa for the purpose of international exposure.

Some of the Pakistanis are lucky to have played at Lord's after the barrier against women cricketers was lifted.

Sri Lanka too have their own share of newcomers with former vice captain Sudarshini Sivanathan being promoted captain. Chamani Seneviratne will be the vice captain. Sudarshini and Chamani with their wide experience and successful participation at two World Cups are expected to lead their team to victory in anticipation for yet another series against the Indians scheduled for March.

In the meantime, Gwen Herat, President of the Women's Cricket Association of Sri Lanka says requests have been made for her to head the national body. "I will think about it later," she said. "For the moment my hands are full with international tours and the World Cup 2005 in South Africa. I have to search for newcomers who can play positive hardball cricket. I want to do better than our male counterparts at the World Cup and believe me, I will this time.

"Though there is a national body for cricket in Sri Lanka, we are the recognised association by the International Women's Cricket Council with full voting rights."

The Sri Lankan women have attained Test status at a very short time, Herat said. Sri Lanka is already a competing finalist for the next World Cup, a rare achievement by any standard and three in a row.
