Two new faces added to Cricket Interim Committee Former Sri Lanka Test paceman Asantha de Mel will be the only member who will be left out of the previous interim administration while all others, including chairman Vijaya Malalasekera, will retain, when the Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Johnston Fernando names a fresh Interim Committee to run the affairs of Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka today. Besides Malalasekera, the others who will find places in the new BCCSL Interim Committee from the old lot are Michael Tissera (Vice Chairman), Kushil Gunasekera (Secretary), Sidath Wettimuny and Mani Jayasinghe. Sources added that, the Sports Minister would not accept the resignations of Malalasekera, Tissera, Gunasekera, Wettimuny and Jayasinghe. Hence, they will continue to hold the same positions, whereas De Mel's resignation has been accepted. All six members of the previous Interim Committee tendered their resignations together, apparently on a joint latter, following a directive of the new Sports Minister Fernando, who demanded officials of the sports which are run by interim bodies to step down immediately. However, two new faces will be added to the new Interim Committee, which will have seven members. Making way to the new BCCSL interim administration are former Thomian athlete and leading lawyer Nalin Ladduwahetti and former Athletic Association President and Trico Chairman Ariya Kannangara. Minister Fernando is scheduled to make the official appointments today. The interim committee appointed by former Sports Minister Lakshman Kiriella has served for eight months. Minister Fernando earlier said that all interim committee members are political appointments and should quit and make way for democratically elected members. Originally it was planned to have a new interim administration for cricket until the fresh elections before March 31, next year. But the latest indications are that there will not be fresh elections to appoint an executive committee to country's richest sports governing body in near future. Since the last week's resignation of the previous interim committee, the BCCSL administration were manned by its chief executive and former Sri Lanka captain Anura Tennekoon. |
