by Florence Wickramage Women have been the most discriminated sector in Asian countries in the process of development. The need to engage women's participation in the process of sustainable development is a priority which needs to be addressed by Governments in the region, said Suranjan Kodituwakku, Coordinator of the Green Movement of Sri Lanka. The Green Movement is a non-governmental organisation comprising environmentalists, farmers, women, youth and fishery organisations. The National Paper to be submitted to the Rio+10 Summit at Johannesburg, South Africa in 2002 is in the process of being formulated. Environmentalists, experts in the field and scientists are engaged in studying various national issues to be included in the National Plan in order to submit recommendations on various areas of sustainable development for the consideration of the Government, Kodituwakku said. He said that due consideration would be given to four important factors in the formulation of the National Paper which will include Capacity Building for all multi-stake holders, Poverty and Population, Effective National Governance and Good Management and Terrorism and Conflict. Kodituwakku further said that Sri Lanka was a "hot-spot" in respect of the rich bio-diversity she has inherited with and warned that due national consideration should be afforded to preserve it for posterity. This becomes important in the light of predictions made by environmental scientists that the world stands to lose all her rainforests by the year 2035 if due precautions are not taken for their protection by respective governments, he said. |
