by L. B. Wijayasiri in Kandy Housing Development Minister P. Harrison told a meeting of the Kandy District Housing Committee that the endeavour of this government was to recommence and continue the housing policy of the previous UNP regime implemented on a concept of the late President R. Premadasa. As the Housing Minister, his expectation was to take the housing program back to the Premadasa era with modifications. The District Housing Committee meeting held at the Kandy District Secretariat was attended by Kandy District MPs Lucky Jayawardene (UNP), A. H. M. Haleem (UNP), Mrs. Chithra Srimathi Mantilake (UNP), Thilina Bandara Tennakoon (PA) and Dimithu Abeykoon (JVP) and Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, District Secretary Sumana Bandara Baddewela, UNP electoral organiser for Nawalapitiya Basil Hally and several other organisers and officials of the NHDA participated. Minister Harrison added that President Premadasa created an opportunity to the country to draw the attention of the whole world towards her by implementing his housing concept. Sri Lanka won world recognition and commendation due to the implementation of 'one lakhs housing' and 'one million housing' projects. The Gam Udawa program should be revived and implemented with suitable modifications. Under the new government's housing program, they plan to construct at least 500 housing units in each district, throughout the country. The allocation of building blocks for those who required to build houses and providing housing loans and technical advice will be carried out by the NHDA disregarding political affiliations. Steps would be taken to construct 10,000 houses within 100 days under the '100 days development programme' of the Ranil Wickremesinghe government, Minister Harrison added. Today, the economy of the country has collapsed. So, therefore it is very important to find a solution to the North-East conflict and bring peace to the country. "Let us dedicate ourselves to saving the country from the present plight. I need the assistance of all concerned to fulfil the task ahead of me in the housing ministry," he added. |
