PNB chief refutes charges

by Sarath Malalasekera

Serious charges made against a Police Narcotics Bureau official and his team were refuted by the Bureau's Chief DIG Sirisena Herath who has requested IGP Lucky Kodituwakku to initiate a full inquiry and clear the team's name sallied by a Senior DIG at a recent weekly Intelligence Conference.

The charge made by Senior DIG H. M. G. B. Kotakadeniya was that the team led by Inspector Nimal Fernando had seized ten kilograms of heroin but produced only six kilograms of the haul.

DIG Sirisena Herath who also heads the Terrorist Investigation Division and the Police Narcotics Bureau has told the Inspector General that the Director of the PNB Senior SP Ranjith Weerasooriya has revealed that the charge was entirely false.

Six kilograms and five suspects including kingpin drug dealer 'Kudu Noor' had been taken into custody by inspector Fernando and his team. There was absolutely no evidence of misappropriation of the seized drugs.

The five suspects were questioned by the officials of the PNB at length and later produced before Chilaw Magistrate and remanded pending completion of the investigation.

DIG Herath had stated that the Senior DIG had made the allegation against the Police party on the basis of the statement made by Kudu Noor, the main suspect in the case.
