Feasibility for South Eastern Province development projects

by Lionel Yodhasinghe

Feasibility studies of a special development project for the South Eastern province under the new Government's Eastern Development Plan will begin soon, said Digamadulla District MP M. D. A. Azeez.

Addressing a ceremony to distribute the final payment of a resettlement housing grant of Rs. 25,000 per family among 300 affected families in the Pottuvil Divisional Secretariat, Mr. Azeez said that the area was neglected for a long time and lacking the basic amenities for the residents.

"I will make special representation to the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in this regard and make all possible efforts to remedy the situation" Mr. Azeez said. Mr. Azeez is the first SLMC MP to be appointed from the Pottuvil area.

A rapid development program in the electricity, telephone, transport, highways, fishery and industrial sectors is needed as no steps were taken by any successive governments to provide these facilities, he said.

Mr. Azeez said that people of all communities, Muslim, Sinhala and Tamil have been enduring many difficulties due to the lack of such basic needs for decades so the expected development will benefit all irrespective of their ethnicity living in Pottuvil, Panama, Lahugala and Komari in the Divisional Secretariat area.

He said that the former Minister late M. H. M. Ashraff took great efforts to look into the grievances of the people living in Pottuvil. He was able to develop several areas such as school and technical education and bring relief to the war-affected families.

Mr. Azeez said that the proposed development plan will be forwarded to Port Development and Shipping and Eastern Development Minister Rauf Hakeem for approval.
