United Motors to sponsor Women's cricket

United Motors have come forward to join Singer Sri Lanka and Lanka Tiles and sponsor women's international cricket. Together they will sponsor the forthcoming Pakistan tour of Sri Lanka Jan 18 to Jan 31 in Colombo and Asgiriya.

They will play One Test and three ODIs. The ODI scheduled for January 26 will be taken care of by the Municipal Sports Committee under the direction of the Mayor of Kandy, Harendra Dunuwille.

In the meantime, Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation is also assisting the Women's Cricket Association of Sri Lanka and the team is currently at practice at their indoor nets and coached by Nihal Kodituwakku who took over from Guy de Alwis. Guy stepped down after the last World Cup. He also coached the first squad to a World Cup in 1997, successfully.

Pakistan replaces West Indies who pulled out of the tour due to fear psychosis after the bombing of the World Towers and subsequent plane crash in New York. They hope to reschedule the tour for early next year.

In the meantime, a squad from India will arrive end of March and the present team will play them. Member clubs of the WCASL will be afforded the opportunity to play against them individually thus allowing many girls to international exposure.

There will be six or seven ODIS but nothing has been finalised because of the Pakistan tour, said Gwen Herat, President, WCASL.
