Police submit report on D.M. Dassanayake

Police submitted a report to Interior Minister John Ameratunga yesterday on 35 crimes committed by former PA Deputy Minister after handing over nominations for the December 5 polls, a Defence Ministry press release said yesterday.

Chilaw SP Willie Abeynayake has instructed the Police to act on the charges made against Mr. Dassanayake. He has also directed that investigations be conducted on the charge that three Agriculture Ministry vehicles have been found in the premises of his residence during polls time.

A release from the ministry said PA candidate D.M.Dassanayake has gone to Medawakkulama, Anamaduwa, on December 4 for a political meeting.

He has been furious with the villagers for the very low attendance. It is reported that he and his gang of thugs shot at eight houses in the vicinity. Three Muslims who were returning to their homes after religious observances have allegedly been shot by the gang.

They have been admitted to Kurunegala hospital. One of them was transferred to the Colombo National Hospital on December 12. Police could not record a statement from him as he was in a critical condition. He died on December 17. The Colombo JMO who conducted the post-mortem inquiry held that death has been caused by shooting and police were ordered to arrest D.M. Dassanayake. By this time, he was already in remand prison.

Police has submitted a report that Mr. Dassanayake be further rigorously imprisoned under Section 296 of the Penal Code as he is the suspect in a large number of murders, the Defence Ministry release said.
