by Channa Kasturisinghe Ports Development, Shipping, Eastern Development and Muslim Religious Affairs Minister Rauff Hakeem had told the employees of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) that he would ensure the welfare of the workers in order to increase the productivity of the Colombo port. Representatives from 24 trade unions of the SLPA met the Minister yesterday and pledged that they would provide him all the support in his efforts to develop the Port. The Minister in his first meeting SLPA trade unions since assuming duties has said that the employees have a major role to play in increasing the productivity of the Port. "It is no secret that the employees have several problems that need immediate attention. It is essential to solve their problems, if our port is to successfully face the competition in the international shipping scene. All the trade unions will have to work as one unit towards achieving this goal," the Minister said. The Trade Union representatives pointed out to the Minister that their salary increments due in every three years have not been effected this year. The Minister has assured them that he would look into the matter and solve the problem. |
