The Urban Development Authority (UDA) has sought police help to evict a large number of squatters attempting to forcibly occupy houses in several newly-built government Housing Schemes. This follows attempts made by certain groups to forcibly enter new houses that are to yet to be allocated in Mahara, Divulapitya, Kirulapana, Kollannawa, Sidharathapura and Kirimandala Mawatha. The UDA also states that despite several complaints to the police stations in these areas no action has been taken by some police stations. "It is also the responsibility of the contractors concerned to ensure that these squatters are evicted before the completed houses are handed over to the authorities concerned. But several of these contractors are also not making any attempts to do so", UDA's Deputy General Manager W.L.J Wasantha Wijeratne has complained in a letter to the UDA Director General. According to the UDA, in one incident a group of squatters entered the Wewasiri Uyana Housing scheme, Divulapitiya on December 13 and caused considerable damage in their attempt to forcibly occupy 15 houses in the scheme. However, the group was evicted yesterday evening, the Divulapitiya Police said. |
