Govt to introduce National Employment Policy

Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said that in terms of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's directive he will introduce the first ever National Employment Policy in the country and create job opportunities in the national and foreign labour markets within the next two months.

He was addressing felicitation ceremonies opposite the historical Kalutara Bo-tree and at the Matugama Divisional Secretariat Auditorium following the assumption of duties as the Minister of Employment and Labour, Minister Samarasinghe said that due to the absence of such a national policy, the country has lost many foreign employment opportunities in the past.

The Minister added that during the ensuing six months he will consult the working class, trade unions, and entrepreneurs to create an atmosphere where the prospective investors will employ an experienced and qualified workforce under a reliable legal framework that will ensure better returns for them, while securing a better future for the working class.

Minister Samarasinghe further said that the Government intends to study the demand for labour in the national and foreign labour market and train job-seekers to suit the market and that the envisaged Employment Policy with the concurrence of the International Labour Organisation will become applicable to all employments in Ministries, State corporations and private enterprises.

Abhayaraja Parivenadhipathi Ven. Moragala Sumangala Thera, Batamullakanda Buddhist Centre Viharadhipati Ven. Matugama Mahanama Thera, Kalutara District MP Lakshman Wijayamanne, Provincial Councillor Senaka Samaranayake and many members of the clergy attended the ceremonies.
