The storage of water in the reservoirs of the CEB power generating system has been drawn down to quite a low figure. The effective thermal power plants are also inadequate consequent to breakdowns. Therefore, it has became necessary to introduce long power cuts of three to four hours duration per day, said a press release issued by the Ministry of Power and Energy. However, in view of the GCE (O'Level) examination which will commence from December 20, 2001 and the festive season, the power cuts will be restricted to only one hour per day between 6.30 p.m. and 10.30 p.m. for the present. The time slots of this one hour period will be announced later through the media. From January 2002 regrettably the power cut period will have to be increased further as above, the release said. The Ministry of Power & Energy is very concerned of this situation and the consequent inconvenience to the public and accordingly all possible steps will be taken to augment the power supply on an urgent basis, it assured. The Ministry appeals to the consumers to co-operate and bear with them in this national crisis by reducing electricity use to the barest minimum. |
