The investigations presently launched by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption has further streamlined their inquiries with regard to the bank accounts maintained by the JVP with the People's Bank branch at Nugegoda, the 'Daily News' reliably learns. The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption have launched this investigation following a complaint made by a resident of Piliyandala to the effect that JVP Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa had mishandled accounts sent to the name of the JVP by the said Bank with the assistance of then JVP politburo member Ruwan Ferdinandesz. It is also understood that the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption has obtained a report detailing the personal wealth of JVP MP Wimal Weerawansa from the Parliament. The Commission has also acquired a thorough report with regard to the bank account maintained by the JVP from the People's Bank and a similar report has been received from the Western Provincial Council. The JVP bank account became a heated topic of discussion among politicians and people alike during the run up to the General Election after it was revealed by the media that JVP Publicity Secretary Wimal Weerawansa and then party strongman Ruwan Ferdinandesz had jointly maintained a bank account in the name of the JVP at the People's Bank branch, Nugegoda. When asked for their comments a JVP Media Unit Spokesman Anuruddha Bandara said that they (JVP) have nothing to hide from the public as far as their bank account was concerned as it was the JVP's official and legal bank account, and that this was nothing but a thinly veiled attempt by UNP friendly Media groups to tarnish the image of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna in the eyes of the public. He said at the end of the on-going investigations the true standing and integrity of the JVP will emerge and that nobody will be able to stop the status of the JVP from being further strengthened throughout the country. |
