Suntel, the private wireless telecom operator in Sri Lanka which made its beginnings in December 1996 completed five years of operation on December 2.

Suntel launched a new corporate website at www.suntel.lk to mark the occasion. Among the other features, the website will have dedicated 24-hour online customer support, where customers can log in at any time to lodge complaints or get answers to their queries, online payments and case studies of some of the largest telecom projects implemented in Sri Lanka.

All Suntel customers enjoyed local and national calls absolutely free within the Suntel network on December 2 to mark the fifth anniversary.

Having connected its first customer within seven days of the launch, Suntel has been at the cutting edge of technology since its inception and has ushered international quality standards into the telecom sector. It pioneered the Digital Wireless Local Loop (WLL) technology in Sri Lanka, a technology that revolutionises business communication capabilities by providing access to the latest telecom innovations, features and services developed globally.

Suntel became the first fixed phone operator in the country to receive the reputed ISO 9002 certification from UKAS of the UK.

Implementation of the Wide Area Network (WAN) for the Colombo Stock Exchange and the 2MB data network for Lanka Educational and Research Network (LEARN) interconnecting nine universities islandwide can be listed as revolutionary breakthroughs in the telecommunications sector.

Video-conferencing facilities for the MAST Group and customised solutions for a large number of corporations including Unilever, Nestle, Hayleys, Caltex and the Ceylinco Groups, Sampath Bank speak of the confidence placed by the industry in Suntel's capabilities, he said.

Since 1996, Suntel has connected over 100,000 subscribers (including rural subscribers as per TRC norms) spanning a large geographical area and successfully achieved the licence conditions stipulated by the Government of Sri Lanka.
