Hotel Sindbad re-opens under new partnership

By Pravin Mendis

Hotel Sinbad, Kalutara, has been re-opened under a new partnership with a Maldivian hoteliering company Cyprea, which operates several popular resorts in the Maldives and Serendib Leisure Management Ltd.

General Manager of Hotel Sinbad , Chris De Saram said the hotel has been fully re-furbished by the Serendib and Cyprea partnership at a cost of over Rs.90 million. All 105 rooms have been upgraded and are air-conditioned while facilities for conferencing have been improved to cater to over 150 participants .

A windsurfing competition has been planned for next January which will mark the official opening due before Christmas, a company spokesman said. A soft opening of the hotel for business took place on December 1.

The Sinbad Hotel is situated between the Kalutara lagoon and the sea providing a panoramic view of the Kalutara town and the famous Bodhiya , the Church and the Mosque.

Mr.De Saram said the hotel has plans for a fully equipped water sports centre operating throughout the year. A floating restaurant which can be described as something unique to a seaside resort is also available with ample room for outdoor parties and functions organised by companies.

The General Manager said a special project to ensure the arrest of sea erosion opposite the hotel has been undertaken by the Coast Conservation Department in building a breakwater to divert the waves away from the hotel. The completion of this project will ensure a good beach for the guests Mr.De Saram said.

The hotel will re-commence its once popular international buffet on Sundays while week days will continue to be theme nights with cuisine from different countries.

The management of the hotel expressed optimism on local tourism picking up from the present situation towards the next season with the improvement of air traffic and travel restrictions being taken off. The opening of the hotel at this crucial juncture bears ample testimony to the confidence the Maldivian company and the Serendib Leisure Management has in the industry picking up Mr. De Saram said.

The Hotel also has plans of acquiring and developing the adjoining premises which was once the Sinbad Garden, now taken over by the Banks with only the structure of the buildings in place. The Maldivian partners have shown a keen interest in buying the property, a spokesman said.

The Sinbad is located on 12 acres of land with the rooms having both sea and lagoon views.
