Boxing Medical Commission elected Sri Lanka's first-ever Boxing Medical Commission was elected at a Medical Seminar held for boxing doctors recently. Hosted by Union Assurance Ltd, the seminar was held at the Union Assurance auditorium and was well attended by medical practitioners of the three armed forces, the Sports Ministry as well as those in government service and general practitioners in private practice. The function of the 'boxing doctor' is to look after the health of the boxer and to supervise the sport to ensure that amateur boxing continues to be a safe sport and that injuries are minimized. It is a condition of the game that boxing cannot commence without the presence of a physician at the ringside. Major General Dr. C. Thurairajah spoke on sports injuries, their prevention and treatment. Mr. Hubert Embuldeniya, International Boxing Juror, spoke on the differentiation and importance of the ringside physician. Dr. F. A. Rajakulendran, Federation of Amateur Asian Boxing Medical Commission, spoke on the responsibilities and duties of the ringside physician, while Donald Munasinghe, Secretary, Referees and Judges Association, spoke on boxing rules. Mrs. Nieva Embuldeniya of the World Women's Boxing Commission, spoke on women's boxing and its popularity. Dr. Githanjan Mendis, Director, Sports Medicine and Consultant Neurologist spoke on doping, the importance of testing boxes for doping and how to prevent doping in sports. U. T. B. Kiridena proposed the vote of thanks. Also present were SSP Thangavelu, Immediate Past President of the Amateur Boxing Association and Lakshman Ranasinghe, Secretary, Amateur Boxing Association, K. V. Dharmadasa, Vice President, Amateur Boxing Association and Major Sam Smarasinghe, President, Sri Lanka Boxing Coaches Association. Office bearers to the Boxing Medical Commission were elected after the seminar. This was a historical event in the local boxing world, as never before has so much responsibility been placed on the ringside physician. Office bearers of the Boxing Medical Commission of Sri Lanka are as follows: Chairman - Dr. F. Rajakulendran, Deputy Chairman - Dr. Githanjan Mendis, Secretary - Dr. Seevali Jayawickrema, Asst. Secretary - Dr. Shiromi Pilapetiya de Alwis, Dr. Harendra Goonesekera, Treasurer - Dr. Azees Razak, Asst. Treasurer - Dr. Vikum Abeygunawardena. |
