AHMEDABAD, India, Thursday (Reuters) England dismissed India for 291 to take a firm grip on the second test against India on Thursday despite a superb 27th test century by Sachin Tendulkar on the third day.

England's left-arm spinner Ashley Giles, recalled after missing the first test through injury, finished with five for 67 after running through the lower order.

England, who made 407 all out for a 116-run first innings lead, reached 15 without loss in their second innings as they chased a victory which would tie the three-test series at 1-1. India won the first test by 10 wickets.

Paceman Matthew Hoggard struck a vital blow by removing Tendulkar for 103 after the batsman had rebuilt the innings in a 118-run fifth wicket stand with Vangipurappu Laxman.

Tendulkar's dismissal close to tea started a collapse and the home side's hopes of a big total ended once Craig White trapped Virender Sehwag leg before for 20 to reduce them to 243-6.

Laxman held firm as wickets fell at the other end before being the last man out for 75.

Tendulkar joined Australians Steve Waugh and Allan Border with 27 test centuries to be joint third in the all-time list behind India's world record holder Sunil Gavaskar (34) and Australian legend Don Bradman (29).
