100 Tests together for Waugh brothers ADELAIDE, Australia, Thursday (AFP) - Australian cricket institutions Steve and Mark Waugh will play their 100th Test together against South Africa at Adelaide Oval Friday. It will be Steve's 143rd Test appearance and Mark's 120th - his 99th in a row. Sentimentality has not been one of the Waughs' trademarks in their glittering careers, but skipper Steve admitted to surprise Thursday when informed of the impending landmark. "It's very surprising," Steve said. Until told of the figure, he would have guessed they'd played 60 or 70 Tests together. "Time does fly - it's a nice achievement. We don't want to get too carried away about it at the moment but later on when we retire and look back on it, it will be significant. "It's nice for the family, for mum and dad - all the sacrifices they made with us growing up." While 36-year-old twins, the brothers are not publicly close - something Steve attributed to a fierce rivalry as they grew up. They have two younger brothers, Dean and Danny. Steve and Mark Waugh have put on eight century-plus Test stands including a memorable 231 in the fourth Test against the West Indies at Kingston in 1994-95. Other brothers to have played Test cricket together are: Andy and Grant Flower (54 Tests for Zimbabwe), Jeff and Martin Crowe (34 for New Zealand), Mushtaq and Sadiq Mohammad (26 for Pakistan) and Ian and Greg Chappell (four Tests for Australia). |
