Polling agent dies on Election day

A polling agent died of a heart attack on the election day December 5.

This was stated at the inquest held into the death of Herath Narasinghe Mudiyanselage Ariyarathne (58) of Bunnehepola, Udubaddawa.

Giving evidence at the inquest Dayawathi Menike (48), the wife of the deceased said that they were married for 20 years and have two children age 18 and 16. He was a farmer. He was under treatment for high blood pressure for about seven years.

On Dec. 5, Ariyaratne left home around 6 a.m. for the polling booth. Then he had complained a headache and pain in the heart. He was taken to the hospital and then transferred to the Colombo National Hospital where he died.

City Coroner Edward Ahangama returned a verdict of a natural death.

Viharadipathi slaying, suspect remanded

The suspect who allegedly shot dead the Viharadhipathi of Kasagala Raja Maha Vihara in Weeraketiya four months ago was taken into custody by the Weeraketiya police recently.

The suspect is a resident of Kasagala, police said.

The police produced the suspect before the Walasmulla Additional Magistrate Sunil Abeysinghe and he was remanded.

SI Ranjith Nihal Karunarathne, the OIC Weerakeitya Police conducted the investigations.

Driver killed by lorry

A 48 year old lorry driver Badalgedara Ranaweera of Uthuwankanda, Mawanella, who was driving along the High Level Road with a load of river sand was knocked down by another lorry going in the same direction, when he stopped the lorry at Makumbura and alighted from the driver's side to have a cup of tea.

He was thrown about eightmetres away on the tarred surface of the road. The injured driver was first taken to the Homagama hospital and later transferred to the Colombo National hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Dr. D. L. L. Ratnayaka AJMO Colombo who conducted the autopsy certified that death was due too severe head injuries caused by a road traffic accident.

Colombo City Coroner Edward Ahangama who held the inquest returned his verdict in accordance with the medical report and the evidence placed before him.

The Coroner also instructed the Police to produce the alleged driver in Court.

The alleged driver T. P. Nihal of Puliyankulama, Anuradhapura was ordered cash bail of Rs. 5,000 and surety bail of Rs. 25,000 by Homagama Magistrate and Additional District Judge Devika Tennakoon.

Stop power cuts

Electricity consumers of the Kesbewa sub-division of the Electricity Board are highly inconvenienced by unprecedented, uninformed interruption of supply of electricity during the early hours of the night when it is crucially needed.

While the affected people express their displeasure regarding this action, they request the relevant authorities to take measures to stop this interruption of electricity supply without further delay.

PS vice chairman remanded over Thihariya violence

The Vice Chairman of the Attanagalla Pradeshiya Sabha A. A. D. P. Karunaratna (PA) who is allegedly connected to election violence in Thihariya area in Attanagalla was produced before the Attanagalla Magistrate Mrs. A. A. Champa Janaki Rajaratna and was remanded till December 19.

Nittambuwa Police filed the plaint.

Cache of arms in restaurant

The Anuradhapura police raided a 'Restaurant' at Anuradhapura town owned by a prominent People's Alliance politician on Wednesday and took a cache of arms and ammunition into custody along with eleven suspects. Police said among the arms seized were two hand bombs, an automatic revolver, a gun and two swords with sharp blades.

The raid was conducted after obtaining a search warrant from the Anuradhapura Magistrate Mr. Harsha Setunge.

The suspects were due to be produced before the Anuradhapura Magistrate yesterday.

The restaurant manager was missing during the raid.

S. Chandramohan (23) from Talawakelle is suffering from a serious heart disease. Durdans Hospitals, Colombo 3 certifies that Chandramohan should go through a heart surgery which will cost about Rs. 500,000.

Chandramohan who has lost his parents and also unemployed due to his disease, depends upon his uncle with his brothers and sisters.

A savings account bearing No. 02-4196101-6 under Chandramohan's name has been opened at the Hatton Branch of the Hatton National Bank.

Chandramohan requests financial assistance from benevolent donors and well-wishers.
