Imtiaz Bakeer Markar, soon after swearing in as the Minister of Mass Communication issued the following message to explain the prime objective of his Ministry:

On this historic occasion of inaugurating the United National Front's task of fulfilling the innumerable aspirations of the people, under the leadership of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe, the onus resting on the Ministry of Mass Communication is enormous.

It is my wish to discharge this duty that is entrusted to me in a more fruitful manner to the satisfaction of the Honourable Prime Minister and his Government as a whole.

Bringing into being a country free of war through a solution to the ethnic problem, establishment of a righteous society through preservation of law and order and upliftment of the living conditions of the masses through fair and reasonable solutions to innumerable economic upheavals are the major tasks before the present Government.

In the process of implementing a true people friendly programme of development in the face of these challenges, the cardinal responsibility of the mass media is to explain to the people the methods of implementation and the fruits thereof that are beneficial to the public with less emphasis as to who is implementing the programmes.This will be the basis of the Media Policy of the United National Front Government.To keep the public perennially informed of the true realities through state and private media is the media process of the United National Front Government.

I am fervently hopeful that all the press and the electronic media personnel in this country will fulfil this important task of implementing this policy with responsibility.

Today the people are awaiting with great anxiety to know the future programmes of the Government of the United National Front which they elected to power with innumerable aspirations and expectations at heart. I have been endowed with the portfolio pertaining to the field responsible for taking to the public the message of implementation of Government programmes.

I am grateful to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for securing me this duty which I shall undertake to discharge with the best of my ability.And I also express my gratitude to the people of Beruwala and the people of the Kalutara District who secured me the public representation necessary to undertake this responsibility.
