Hantane squatters arrested by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen Kandy Police have taken into custody from the site seven land-grabbers who tried to forcibly 'squat' on a division of Hantane Group, Kandy, on Tuesday afternoon (December 11). The manager of Hantane Group, Kandy, Ronnie Gunaratne said that during the last few days, there had been a large scale attempt to forcibly occupy the Uduwela and Uragala divisions of the plantation by encroachers who initially numbered around 500 in about 100 acres. But, the Kandy Police took prompt action to drive them away on Monday with a stern warning not to enter the property again. Guneratne said that they re-entered the property again on Tuesday and some of them had caused damage to a very valuable and old ebony tree by chopping off the big branches. The management had to once again, seek the assistance of the Kandy Police to evict the encroachers, who had earlier demarcated the land for themselves. The Police headed by HQI Kandy Chief Inspector Mahendra again rushed to the estate and the encroachers on seeing the police had taken to their heels but a seven of them were nabbed and taken to the Police Station and further action will be taken against them. Hantane Group is one of the finest estates in Kandy and is about four miles from Kandy town and the majestic twin peaks are a land mark. The property is owned by the Janatha Estates Development Board. There is a housing scheme at the entrance to the property and is a highly residential area and there are a number of institutions located around the place and overall the land value is high in the area, due to its excellent location. |
