First task to bring down COL and unemployment by Malwana special correspondent Our leader Ranil Wickremasinghe extended his hand to the PA for the promotion of a coalition government soon after he became Prime Minister in order to bring peace and harmony to the country which is racked with ethnic conflict for a number of years. But the PA rejected this golden opportunity despite some PA top rungers liking to join a coalition government. This shows that the PA is not really keen in solving the burning problem of the era and only sheds crocodile tears, said Gampaha District MP Suranimala Rajapaksa. He was addressing the UNP supporters at a reception accorded to him at Siyambalapewatta community hall in Delgoda on Tuesday. The reception was organised by Delgoda UNP Central organisation with the assistance of the residents of the area. Suranimala Rajapaksa further said that UNP politicians were intimidated and harassed during the election period by powerful PA politicians and their henchmen. But people of this country who are politically very astute retaliated this by their mandate. They have strong faith in UNP. They brought back the UNP to power with a big majority. Though duration of parliament is six years the UNP obtained a landslide victory to the extent that it can govern the country even for twenty years. He said the economy of this country during the last seven years flourished only on TV and Radio news and was not in reality. Poverty became from bad to worse, prices of basic commodities skyrocketed. He said there were 32,000 workers at Biyagama FTZ before 1994 which now stands at 23,533 due to the closure of many factories. Inefficiency of the PA regime resulted in the closure of many factories. They didn't have proper and strategic plans to boost foreign investment. He said first and foremost the duty at the new government is to bring down the cost of living and unemployment as much as possible. We will set up new factories and provide jobs to thousands of jobless. Job opportunity will be given only in keeping with qualification not by dint of any political influence, he said. He said children of poor who are talented but unable to carry on their studies due to financial handicap will be given assistance to continue their studies. Suranimala Rajapakse also said the UNP will take action to eradicate corruption and bribery that were rampant during the PA regime. Naseer Hassan secretary of the UNP central organisation, Malwana also spoke. |
