Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday identified several priority areas for immediate implementation by the Government, among which is the enthronement of the rule of law and restoration of democracy. Addressing the first post-election United National Front Parliamentary group meeting held at the Mayor's House, Colombo the premier said that although he had been handed over a branch of thorns by the PA his Government would endeavour to make it bloom with flowers. He recalled the words of Winston Churchill in 1940 to the British nation where the Prime Minister told the Public that he could only offer them blood, sweat and tears. Similarly, the United front Government would endeavour to wipe away the blood and sweat and tears of the Sri Lankan nation. Among the priority areas identified by Mr. Wickremesinghe was the enlistment of the cooperation of all sections in Sri Lanka together with the support of India, America and the European countries for ending the war and establishing lasting peace. He also announced the appointment of Ministry Secretaries within the next few days and the setting up of a Ministerial committee for the appointment of heads of public bodies and corporations. Mr. Wickremesinghe also reiterated his campaign pledge that the Prime Minister and Ministers shall not draw their salaries of their office except their emoluments as MPs for the next two years. He also said he would utilise the services of all MPs in the development programme. |
