Prima Ceylon sets up flour processing mill

Prime Ceylon Ltd, fully owned subsidiary of the Singapore based Prima group has invested substantially to set up under one roof, what could be claimed as one of the regions largest and technologically advanced flour processing mill.

Designed and equipped by the prestigious Buhler of Switzerland, the plant can produce 2500 metric tons of flour per day, working in 24 hours shifts, 324 days per year.

The Pier, Power plant, Offices, Canteen etc, as well as the twelve storey mill and its gigantic silos, with a storage capacity of 130,000mt were constructed providing direct employment to some 750 men and women, and for hundreds more indirectly. Undoubtedly Prima's presence is a boon for the socio-economic development of the region.

After the US$ 65 million deal benefitting the Lankan Government, Prima Ceylon Limited has taken ownership of the sprawling property in China Bay, Trincomalee, under the terms of the provisions of the BOO (Build, Operate, Own) agreement. Accordingly the procurement, milling and distribution of wheat flour in Sri Lanka is liberalized.

Prima Ceylon Limited is already on the fast track to expand its product range to satisfy the culinary needs of the people of the country. The company, apart from the ownership will also handle the distribution of flour throughout the Island.

To show its commitment and confidence Prima Ceylon Limited will invest further in upgrading, installing additional machinery and building more silos to make the flour mill in Trincomalee the most efficient in the region, with high output and low unit cost.

The jetty too will be strengthened to berth larger vessels, as a result the expansion of silo capacity will be effected. Initially these expansions will cater to the increasing need of the population in the future, and the secondary objective will be for export, in keeping with the Government Economic emphasis on export promotion.

With the assumption of ownership of the property since June 20 this year, and with over 500 lorries transporting the finished products to the distribution units islandwide, the company has assured its consumers throughout the island, a choice of high quality wheat products to be marketed in the future.

Keeping intact the price of flour to the customer, the company through its vast network of 250 distributors including MPCS union's will ensure quick and efficient delivery of super quality flour of choice to suit diverse preparations of eastern and western dishes, a press release said.
