Troops foil LTTE bid to overrun detachment

by Trincomalee correspondent

Security Forces thwarted an LTTE attempt to overrun the Army detachment at Pahala Thoppur in Muttur, Trincomalee on Tuesday night, killing 10 terrorists and injuring another 10, the Defence Ministry said yesterday.

Three soldiers were killed and 12 others injured in the confrontation which lasted nearly one hour.

The Army detachment at Pahala Thoppur about 10 Km south of Muttur came under attack around 11 pm on Tuesday. The troops backed by reinforcements from a nearby detachment repulsed the attackers.

The terrorists initially captured an Army bunker, which was later cleared by the reinforcements. Soldiers directed artillery and mortar fire towards the terrorists fleeing into the jungle.

Two bodies of terrorists were recovered in a clearing operation in the area by the first light yesterday.

Three houses in Pahala Thoppur were damaged and a pregnant mother was injured as LTTE mortars fell in the village. The terrorists also attacked a nearby Police Post injuring a Police Constable and a soldier, defence sources added.

Meanwhile, a Police station in Valachchenai came under an LTTE attack. Three policemen were killed and another six were injured in the attack, which also destroyed a telecommunications exchange.

Thousands of telephone subscribers in Valachchenai, Batticaloa were inconvenienced yesterday as this was the only telecommunications exchange in Valachchenai. Reinforcements from the nearby Army detachment and Police stations brought the situation under control.
