Pre-poll violence

Puttalam

Puttalam District PA candidate A. M. Kamarudeen's vehicle was attacked by supporters of a rival UNP candidate at Viruthodai, Madurankuliya yesterday morning.

After smashing up the vehicle the attackers had assaulted former Jaffna District MP Dr. Iliyas who was accompanying Mr. Kamarudeen in the vehicle and abducted the three homeguards escorting them along with their weapons. Puttalam Police conducting investigations later rescued the three homeguards.

Meanwhile the Wennappuwa Police manning the Lunuwila checkpoint found five hand grenades in a van in which a former Police inspector was travelling yesterday morning. The ex-Police inspector and four others travelling in the van were taken into custody along with the arms. Investigations are continuing.

In another election related incident three persons including an infant girl were injured and admitted to the Anamaduwa hospital when a group of UNP supporters attacked the house of a PA supporter at Sangattikulama, Anamaduwa with a hand grenade yesterday morning. The Anamaduwa Police is conducting investigations.

Kalutara

A hand bomb was hurled at the Ethanamandala polling booth in Kalutara South by some unidentified persons around 3 am yesterday. The Presiding Officer received minor injuries in the explosion.

An empty ballot box was slightly damaged but it was used when polling began at 7 a.m. The Kalutara South Police is investigating.
