Training in production of carbonic fertiliser

by Kamburupitiya group correspondent

Training classes for the cultivators in the Matara district on the divisional secretariat basis under the 'Sara boomi' program of the Department of Agriculture has now been utilised for producing carbonic fertilisers.

The Asst. Director of Agriculture, Matara S. Ratnasiri says that certain farmers in the district had been able to obtain 120 to 140 bushels of paddy from an acre by using carbonic fertilizer under the model yaya development programs implemented in the Matara district for popularising carbonic fertilizers.

Mr. Ratnasiri also says that if farmers in areas such as Yatiyana, Kirinda, Puhulwella, Kamburupitiya and Hakmana where paddy farming is largely carried out could utilize straw in their fields as carbonic fertilisers much more progress from paddy production could be obtained.

The Matara District Agricultural Committee has informed the Central Environmental Authority to devise ways to draft legislation to stop burning of straw in paddy fields by the farmers.
