Election related incidents 1575

The number of election related incidents and complaints rose to 1575 yesterday, November 30, the Police Election Secretariat (PES) said.

Of these 806 were by the UNP, 526 by the PA, 76 by the JVP, 54 by the SLMC, 16 by the EPDP, six by the TULF, two by the CWC, one by the Sihala Urumaya. Other parties including Independent groups made 87 complaints.

Director of the Police Election Secretariat, Senior SP T.J. Miskin told the "Daily News" yesterday that several major incidents were reported in Chilaw, Anuradhapura, Anamaduwa, Kalutara, Tangalle and Gampaha Police areas.

The highest number of incidents including kilings received by PES was 178 from Chilaw. The second heighst received was 154 Anuradhapura and Ampara 142.

PES DIG Gamini Navaratne said that two special police teams had been despatched to Chilaw and Anuradhapura Police areas.

The DIG also had directed all officers in charge of Police stations to use road blocks in order to check vehicles carrying weapons during the nomination and election period.

He also directed them to have round the clock mobile and foot patrols as a preventive measure.
