SAARC engineers Int'l parley in Lanka

The Apex Body of the SAARC Diploma Engineers Forum held its fourth conference and international seminar in Sri Lanka on November 17 - 18. The inaugural ceremony together with the international conference on the theme "Obligations of the Incorporated Engineer (Diploma Engineer) towards the society in poverty alleviation in his own country" was held at the BMICH on November 17. Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake was the Chief Guest.

Among others who participated were the Heads of Foreign Missions of SAARC countries. Director General of SAARC Desk in Bangladesh - Hasib Azees, who especially flew for this event, a strong delegation of Diploma Engineers from SAARC countries, Vice Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa - Prof. Dayantha Wijeyesekera who was the Guest of Honour and several other special invitees and institution members.

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake addressing the Forum said that the theme for the International Seminar "Obligations of the Incorporated Engineer (Diploma Engineer) towards the society in poverty alleviation in his own country" is very timely and relevant in the present day context of the problems in the region.

"You are aware that Sri Lanka has made substantial gains in reducing poverty since independence Sri Lanka distinguishes itself from all other low-income countries significantly due to contributions made in the areas of vigorous dedications in Social & Economic development, high standard of education and basic health services, he said.

He informed the Forum that the Government has invested substantial resources in the development of irrigation, highways, ports, power, telecommuncation, housing and urban development. The Engineering Profession is largely responsible for the significant achievements in developing the required infrastructure to achieve the objectives of the country, he added.

Other speakers were Prof. Dayantha Wijeyesekara - Vice Chancellor of University of Moratuwa, Hasib Azees - Director General of SAARC Desk, Foreign Ministry, Bangladesh, Khadga K. C. - Chairman, SAARC Diploma Engineers Forum, A. K. M. A. Hamid - Secretary General, SAARC Diploma Engineers Forum, D. S. Senarath - President, Institution of Incorporated Engineers - Sri Lanka, Representatives from Diploma Engineers Associations of each SAARC country.
