Development of hospitals in N-E

On the recommendations of the Presidential Task Force the North East Provincial Health Ministry has identified seven hospitals in the NEP for development. The hospitals identified were Trincomalee, Kantale, Vavuniya, Mannar and Point Pedro base hospitals and Valachenai and Maha Oya district hospitals.

Provincial Health Ministry disclosed that it has been proposed to upgrade the Trincomalee and Vavuniya base hospitals to general hospitals soon. New cadre proposals have also been recommended by the cadre committee.

Last year an upstair building was put up as quarters for nurses and it has been planned to put up a three-storeyed building with eight quarters for medical officers.

During 2001 a sum of Rs. 30m was spent to put up necessary building and to buy necessary equipment for Trincomalee base hospital. Quarters for para medical staff and minor employees will be taken up next year. Trincomalee hospital will soon get an Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU) too.

Rs. 70m have been spent to put up necessary building at the Kantale base hospital which was upgraded over an year back. An operation theatre complex was put up including a medical laboratory, X-Ray unit, two additional wards with 48 beds an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with seven beds. Four consultants quarters are nearing completion according to provincial health ministry.

It has been planned to build an OPD complex, medical officers quarters, nurses quarters, para medical officers' quarters, and minor employees quarters and a three-storeyed ward complex to meet the requirement of the area.

The OPD complex at the Vavuniya base hospital including an operation theatre, medical laboratory and an Intensive Care Unit has been completed at a cost of Rs. 75m.

It has been planned to put up a maternity ward, consultants quarters a water supply and sewerage scheme.

Medical officers and consultants quarters have been put up at the Mannar base hospital at a cost of Rs. 25m.

An operation theatre and a maternity ward have been put up at the Valachenai district hospital at a cost of Rs. 30m. Work on an operation theatre and medical officers quarters have begun at the Maha Oya DH this year. This year Rs. 15m have been spent.

No improvement work has yet been started at the Point Pedro base hospital.
