Security protection to be restored for Major Gen Munasinghe by Kumar Wethasinghe The Fundamental Rights application filed by former Deputy Speaker Major General Sarath Munasinghe was settled before the Supreme Court when the Commander of the SL Army had concentred to provide 10 soldiers and an officer to provide security for former Deputy Speaker. The Bench comprised Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva PC and Justices. Dr (Mrs) Shirani Bandaranayake and P. Edussuriya. The Army commander had agreed to restore the security personnel provided to former Deputy Speaker Major General Sarath Munasinghe as recommended by the Human Rights Commissioner. Last week the court sought the 3rd respondent's (Army chief) views on the recommendations made by the HRC in connection with security for Major General Munasinghe which he had from the date of his retirement until 12/10/01. The Human Rights Commission headed by Faize Musthapha PC strongly by recommended the Army Commander to take steps to restore the security protection to the petitioner effective 23/11/01. Deputy Solicitor General Palitha Fernando with State Counsel. Riyaz Hamza appeared for the respondents. D. P. Mendis appeared for the 3rd respondent.
