The Eelam People's Democratic Party is led by Douglas Devananda, Minister of Rehabilitation and Reconstruction. The Tamil Tigers website said although Douglas Devananda had declared that he would join any government formed after December 5 regardless of the party, the United National Party would not accommodate Devananda in their government. The web site said Devananda had declared at many meetings he would join any party government formed since he wanted to serve the people of the area as a Rehabilitation Minister. But Devananda would not be accepted into the United National Party, the website, reported. If a UNP administration is formed after December 5 election, according to the already published information by the LTTE, since the UNP was committed to talks with the Tigers and as a precondition to the talks all alliances with elected representatives of the Tamils, other than the once sanctioned by them, would be severed. By getting into talks with them the UNP would be recognizing the Tigers as the sole representatives of the Tamil people. Under such circumstances, analysts point out it would not be possible for a putative UNP government to deal with the likes of Devananda. |
