No violence in Gampaha

by Isuru T. Malawaraarachchi

While election violence has reached its climax, a measure of sanity seems to have settled down in the Gampaha electorate with candidates of the two main contenders, the PA and UNP, conducting their campaigns in a climate of amity and camaraderie.

People witnessed last Friday how PA's candidate, Sunil Wijayaratne and UNP's Ajith Mannapperuma were distributing their leaflets and pamphlets with a large number of supporters from both sides near the Gampaha railway station.

Residents of Gampaha town appreciated the unity displayed by two rival candidates at a time when the election campaign elsewhere is being marred by violence instigated by rival candidates.

The Gampaha Police also mentioned that it was unique to note that no election related complaints have been reported from the Gampaha electorate so far, while in other districts several murders have also taken place.
